Identify talent at young age for better show at international level: Sachin Tendulkar

Identify talent at young age for better show at international level: Sachin Tendulkar
Indian cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar on Monday rued the absence of a system to identify and nurture talent early in India, saying they are spotted only in their later years, by which time it was too late for them to compete in international level.

"I feel in many countries, talents are identified at a young age. That is what we lack in India. When we identify talents, they are in teens. That is too late for competing in international matches," he said during a brief interaction with reporters here soon after launching ISL franchise Kerala Blasters' team anthem and jersey.

Sachin, co-owner of Kerala Basters football team, said they had signed local talent Dileep Menon, who would soon join the outfit.

"We will continue to support local talents," he said adding when he came to Kerala during April/may to announce the formation of the team, they had said local talent would be encouraged.

On the team's yellow jersey, he said it stands for determination and faith. The Blasters have succeeded in acquiring players within India and from all football playing countries, he said.

Barack Obama hosts Narendra Modi: As it happened

Dinner at the White House ended on a positive note. PM Modi heads to Blair House.

PM Modi did not have dinner as he is fasting. He only had lukewarm water, said MEA.

Modi and Obama talked to each other for 90 minutes during the dinner.

People outside White House performed Garba, Bhangra in honour of PM Modi.

While dinner was on, White House released a vision statement for the US-India Strategic Partnership: 'Chalein saath saath: Forward together we go'.

US First Lady Michelle Obama was not present at the private dinner.

Around 20 dignitaries were present during the dinner.

The private dinner hosted by Obama begins at Blue Room.

Security was beefed up around White House as PM Modi arrived for private dinner.

US Vice President Joe Biden, Secretary of State John Kerry, National Security Advisor Susan Rice and USAID chief Rajiv Shah were also invited at Obama's dinner for Modi, ANI reports.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh and Indian Ambassador to the US S Jaishankar accompanied PM Modi at the White House.

As per MEA, US President Barack Obama gave Modi a warm welcome at the door of the White House. He also greeted him by saying 'Kem Cho Mr Prime Minister' (A Gujarati way of asking 'How are you?').

Narendra Modi, Barack Obama write joint editorial for US newspaper

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Barack Obama have written a joint editorial for a leading American newspaper that will be published tomorrow, announced Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin on Monday, after the two leaders met over dinner at the White House.

Briefing reporters about the 90-minute long dinner diplomacy between Modi and Obama, Akbaruddin said: "This is the first time a US President and Indian leader will be writing a joint editorial.”

After using technology successfully in their respective election campaigns, Modi and Obama have for the first time interacted digitally to come out with a joint editorial.

Officials on both sides have been very secretive about the joint op-ed and have not even disclosed the name of the newspaper that will publish it.

Asked how the two leaders collaborated to write the joint editorial, Akbaruddin said both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Obama are great votaries of digital diplomacy and therefore, it is very easy to digitally interact and through electronic means and it (editorial) was only finalised just today after Prime Minister's arrival here.

Asked if both the leaders were so active digitally why there was no exchange between the two on cyber space, he said "wait and watch".

He also said that this was for the first time that an Indian leader has ventured on the path of a joint editorial.

The Prime Minister wrote an editorial in Wall Street Journal before he headed to the US for his first visit since taking power in May.

In the op-ed, Modi asserted that there is a “high tide of hope for change” in India.

He had also said that India would pursue its dreams in partnership with its international friends.

India, US release vision statement - 'Chalein saath, saath'

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached the White House for the private dinner hosted by President Barack Obama, India and the US on Monday issued a vision statement "Chalein Saath Saath: Forward Together We Go" that called for a joint endeavour for prosperity and peace.

"As leaders of two great democratic nations with diverse traditions and faiths, we share a vision for a partnership in which the United States and India work together, not just for the benefit of both our nations, but for the benefit of the world," the White House said in a statement.

The vision statement said that US-India strategic partnership is a joint endeavour for prosperity and peace, and through intense consultations, joint exercises and shared technology, their security cooperation will make the region and world safe and secure.

"Together, we will combat terrorist threats and keep our homelands and citizens safe from attacks, while we respond expeditiously to humanitarian disasters and crises."

"We will prevent the spread of weapons of mass destruction, and remain committed to reducing the salience of nuclear weapons, while promoting universal, verifiable, and non-discriminatory nuclear disarmament," it said.

Asserting that the US and India will have a transformative relationship as trusted partners in the 21st century, the White House said, "Our partnership will be a model for the rest of the world".

Acknowledging that the two countries have vastly different histories, but both our founders sought to guarantee freedoms that allow our citizens to determine their own destiny and pursue their personal aspirations.

"Our strategic partnership rests on our shared mission to provide equal opportunity for our people through democracy and freedom," said the White House.

According to the vision statement, the two countries will support an open and inclusive rules-based global order, in which India assumes greater multilateral responsibility, including in a reformed United Nations Security Council.

Observing that climate change threatens both the countries, the vision statement said they will join together to mitigate its impact and adapt to the changing environment.

"We will address the consequences of unchecked pollution through cooperation by our governments, science and academic communities."

"We will partner to ensure that both countries have affordable, clean, reliable, and diverse sources of energy, including through our efforts to bring American-origin nuclear power technologies to India," the vision statement said.

The US and India commit to expand and deepen their strategic partnership in order to harness the inherent potential of the two democracies and the burgeoning ties between their people, economies, and businesses.

"Together we seek a reliable and enduring friendship that bolsters security and stability, contributes to the global economy, and advances peace and prosperity for our citizens and throughout the world. We will ensure that economic growth in both countries brings better livelihoods and welfare for all of our people. Our citizens value education as a means to a better life, and our exchange of skills and knowledge will propel our countries forward. Even the poorest will share in the opportunities in both our countries," it said.

It said, "joint research and collaboration in every aspect - ranging from particles of creation to outer space - will produce boundless innovation and high technology collaboration. Open markets, fair and transparent practises will allow trade in goods and services to flourish."

Underscoring that the currents of kinship and commerce, scholarship and science tie the two countries together, the joint vision statement said these areas of cooperation will allow India and the US to rise above differences by maintaining the long-term perspective.

"Every day, in myriad ways, our cooperation fortifies a relationship that matches the innumerable ties between our people, who have produced works of art and music, invented cutting-edge technology, and responded to crises across the globe," it said.

"The United States and India commit to expand and deepen our strategic partnership in order to harness the inherent potential of our two democracies and the burgeoning ties between our people, economies, and businesses."

"Together we seek a reliable and enduring friendship that bolsters security and stability, contributes to the global economy, and advances peace and prosperity for our citizens and throughout the world," the vision statement said.

"Our people will be healthier as we jointly counter infectious diseases, eliminate maternal and child deaths, and work to eradicate poverty for all. And they will be safer as we ensure the fullest empowerment of women in a secure environment," it said.

PM Modi meets top US CEOs; pitches for brand India

With an aim to attract US business honchos to invest in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi who is on his maiden visit to the United States, had a breakfast meeting with the CEOs of 11 top US companies on Monday.

At the meeting, PM Modi said that Infrastructure development is a big opportunity, it creates jobs and enhances quality of life of our citizens.

He also said that India is open-minded. “We want change. Change that is not one sided,” Modi said.

Narendra Modi further said, “We want to convert the Supreme Court judgment on coal allocation into an opportunity to move forward and clean up the past.”

The SC last week quashed allocation of 214 out of 218 coal blocks alloted to various companies since 1993 terming it as "fatally flawed" and allowed the Government to take over operation of 42 such blocks which are functional.

Modi's statement comes in the backdrop of concerns that the judgment would have an adverse impact on corporate sentiments and overall business climate.

PM Modi told the top CEOs, “It is my conviction that tax stability is essential for confidence building.”

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted famous Indian tea to the captains of 11 large American corporations.

The signature gift box containing three famous tea of India - Darjling, Assam and Nilgiri - was presented by the Prime Minister after he hosted a breakfast meeting for them.

Congress fields 27 women; BJP 21 in Maharashtra polls

Ex-Chief Minister Ashok Chavan's wife Ameeta, who is making her electoral debut in Maharashtra Assembly polls, and late BJP leader Gopinath Munde's daughter Pankaja Munde are among the key women legislators testing their luck this time, with the Congress firmly in the driver's seat fielding the highest number of women candidates.

Congress has fielded the highest number of women (27) candidates followed by BJP 21, NCP 16 and Shiv Sena 10 women candidates for the state Assembly polls.

In BJP's list, except sitting legislators Madhuri Misal from Parvati in Pune and Pankaja Munde Palve from Parli in Beed district, all others are new faces.

In Dahisar, BJP has fielded party corporator Manisha Chaudhari. Out of the 21 women, two have come from NCP. Bharti Lavhekar earlier with NCP is now BJP candidate from Versova in Mumbai.

While former NCP MLC Manda Mhatre is taking on Ganesh Naik of NCP in Belapur.

Congress has fielded several female legislators this time including sitting MLAs Women and Child Welfare minister Varsha Gaikwad from Dharavi, Yashomati Thakur (Teosa), Pranati Shinde (Solapur city central), Nirmala Gavit (Igatpuri) and Annie Shekhar from Colaba.

Also, Congress chose Asawari Deotale, a relative of Tourism Minister Sanjay Deotale from Warora due to which he quit the party to contest from his constituency on BJP ticket.

The new faces include corporator Sheetal Mhatre, who is also the Mumbai Mahila Congress chief from Dahisar, Maharashtra Womens' Commission head Sushiben Shah from Malabar Hill among others.

Both parties said that grassroot women activists who have been in public life for long have been chosen as candidates.

In many places, women candidates from various parties are pitted against each other.

Varsha Gaikwad of Congress is pitted against Divya Dhole of BJP in Dharavi; in Teosa, Yashomati Thakur of Congress is contesting against BJP's Nivedita Chaudhari. Praniti Shinde will take on BJP's Mohini Patki in Solapur city central.

In Dahisar, sitting Sena MLA Vinod Ghosalkar will face the combined might of Sheetal Mhatre (Congress), Manisha Chaudhari (BJP) and former Mumbai Mayor Shubha Raul, who defected from Sena to MNS in protest against Ghosalkar's renomination.

Kaij in Beed district will witness a all-women contest with BJP's Sangeeta Thambare, Namita Mundada, daughter-in-law of late Vimaltai Mundada (NCP), Shiv Sena's Kalpana Narhire and Anjali Ghadge of Congress in the fray.

Prominent among the women defectors apart from Shubha Raul is Congress leader Vasudha Deshmukh from Achalpur who is contesting as a NCP candidate. She is pitted against Surekha Thakre of Shiv Sena.

RSS rapped BJP for breaking alliance: Shiv Sena

The RSS has criticised the state BJP for snapping the 25-year-old partnership with it last week, the Shiv Sena said in its party mouthpiece on Tuesday.

In a front-page revelation in 'Saamana', the Shiv Sena has said that three days after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) broke the alliance, a secret meeting was held in south Mumbai.

That evening September 28, the BJP leaders sought the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) guidance on how to approach the electorate under the changed political scenario in Maharashtra where all the five major parties are now contesting independently.

"Did you consult us before breaking the alliance? Why is BJP running away form Hindutva? Or did you break it because of your selfish interests... This has created divisions among Hindus...," the Sena quoted RSS leaders as saying at the closed-door meeting.

"You are only bothered about your chair... With what face are you going to approach the electorate and seek votes?" the RSS leaders hit out, the 'Saamana' said quoting sources present at the meeting.

Another RSS leader made it clear to the BJP leaders not to "indulge in such strange experiments - The Shiv Sena is not a Nitish Kumar party, they are our true friends", they said.

Pulling up BJP leaders, the RSS seniors said they appeared least concerned about "serious issues like love jihad, land jihad, cow slaughter and (religious) conversions".

It also castigated the BJP over the move to admit several deserters from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) to the party fold and even allotted them tickets for the forthcoming elections.

"(NCP president) Sharad Pawar has divided the Marathis and sabotaged Hindutva forces... Your decision to reward his men election tickets has weakened Hindutva," they said.

Among the BJP representatives present included Union Minister Ananth Kumar and state party leader Ravindra Bhusari.

This is the second expose the Sena has carried out in couple of days, causing major embarrassment to the BJP - barely a fortnight before the Oct 15 state assembly elections.

On Monday, it revealed how the BJP had tried to short-change the Republican Party of India (A)'s Ramdas Athawale, a former member of the six-party saffron Grand Alliance which collapsed last week.

After the break-up, the BJP went separate with the four other smaller partners, including RPI(A), while the Sena is wending its independent path.

Now, the Sena has also decided to quit the central government by withdrawing its sole MP Anant Geete who will resign after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's return from US this week.

RIP Orkut! Google finally shuts down website today

Internet giant Google on Tuesday confirmed it will shut down its Orkut, its first social networking site on September 30.

The social media platform is very popular in India and Brazil, but lost sheen to rivals like Facebook and Twitter in other parts of the world, leading to its closure.

In a blog post, Google said, “Over the past decade, YouTube, Blogger and Google+ have taken off, with communities springing up in every corner of the world. Because the growth of these communities has outpaced Orkut`s growth, we`ve decided to bid Orkut farewell”.

Orkut was launched in 2004, the same year when Facebook was founded. Facebook is now the world`s largest social network with 1.28 billion users.

Google launched its Google+ social network in 2011 and has been slowly weaving it into other services. While Google+ was positioned to compete with Facebook in the beginning, over the last few years, it has established Google+ as a unified "user identity" system.

In 2010, Facebook overtook Orkut as the top social networking site in India with 20.9 million visitors in July that year compared to Orkut`s 16 percent growth with 19.9 million visitors, according to research firm comScore.

Google said it would preserve an archive of all Orkut communities that will be available from September 30.

CLT20 2014: KKR continue unbeaten streak, beat Dolphins by 36 runs

Robin Uthappa and Manish Pandey smashed attacking half centuries to keep IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders winning run intact with a convincing 36-run victory over Dolphins in an inconsequential Group A match of the Oppo Champions League Twenty20, here on Monday.

While Utahappa blazed his way to a fiery 85 off 55 balls with the help of 13 boundaries, Pandey matched his senior partner stroke for stroke en route his 47-ball 76-run knock which was studded with five fours and five huge sixes. The duo stitched an unbeaten 153 runs stand for off just 15 overs for the third wicket to power KKR to 187 for two after electing to bat and Sunil Narine picked up three wickets for 33 runs to restrict Dolphins to 151 for eight in 20 overs.

AS IT HAPPENED

KKR will now face Hobart Hurricanes in the first semifinal here on Thursday. With KKR already assured of a semifinal berth after three consecutive wins, the tie was more of a practice game for the Kolkata outfit.

Dolphins, on the other hand, had pride to play for having already crashed out of the tournament after losing all their three earlier matches. But there was hardly anything to cheer for the South African side as Uthappa and Pandey slaughtered the Dolphins bowlers to all parts of the ground to register KKR's record partnership for the third wicket.

Chasing the imposing total, the Dolphins witnessed a horrendous start as they slumped to 57 for four in 8.6 overs. Opener Cameron Delport and Cody Chetty was dismissed in the first two overs but skipper Morne van Wyk kept alive Dolhins' fight with a 28-ball 34 during which he struck five fours and one six before he became part-time spinner Yusuf Pathan's (2/25) second victim of the day.

In between Vaughn van Jaarsveld (19) was stumped by Uthappa off Piyush Chawla. With Dolphins in a spot of bother, Khaya Zondo (32) and Andile Phehlukwayo (37) produced a rear-guard 63-run fifth wicket partnership to keep the Dolphins still in the hunt.

Young Phehlukwayo scored a quickfire 37 off 18 balls and decoraetd his knock with six fours and one six to show the cricketing world his potential. Mystery spinner Narine brought his innings to a close by going through his defence in the 15th over.

An over later, Robbie Frylinck (11) and Zondo fell in consecutive balls in similar fashion, caught by Chawla to give Narine a hat-trick opportunity, which did not materialise. With Dolphins needing 52 runs off the last three overs, Jonathan Vandiar too perished in the next over in search of quick runs.

From there on victory was just a formality for KKR which they accomplished in consummate ease. Earlier, electing to bat, KKR did not have the best of starts as they lost two wickets early with the team score reading just 34 runs. While skipper Gautam Gambhir (12) was cleaned by Frylinck (1/29) in the fourth over, new man in Jacques Kallis too was out bowled by Craig Alexander (1/36) in the last ball of the next over after the veteran South Africa started his knock with hit over the fence.

But then Uthappa and Pandey joined hands and produced a some scintillating strokeplay during their unconquered partnership. Uthappa was the more aggressive among the duo at the start but Pandey used his long handle with great effect and caught up with his partner as the match progressed. He looked the more dangerous towards the fag end of the innings as he dealt in just boundaries and sixes.

In fact, Pandey smashed Kyle Abbott for two boundaries and as many sixes to pick up 22 runs off the 18th over, the highest of the innings.

Shiv Sena's Anant Geete to quit Modi cabinet

As expected, the Shiv Sena on Monday announced that Union Heavy Industries Minister Anant Geete would resign from the Modi government.

The announcement was made by Sena president Uddhav Thackeray. Geete would formally tender his resignation after Prime Minister Modi returns from the US.

Importantly, the BJP, which had claimed that it held no animosity towards Sena, had been refusing to take a clear stand on the issue.

"The party has to take a decision. We have not had any discussions about him. The issue has not come into our consideration yet," senior party leader and Home Minister Rajnath Singh said yesterday.

"It's very unfortunate. We discussed it for long but, unfortunately, it (the talks) did not work out," he said.

However, the Shiv Sena has held no such feelings of warmth towards the BJP post the split.

An editorial in party mouthpiece Saamna dubbed those who broke the 25-year-old alliance as "enemies of Maharashtra."

"Our other (Mahayuti) alliance parties wanted the Sena-BJP combine to continue. More than that, it was what the 11 crore people of Maharashtra wanted. Those who trampled these sentiments are enemies of Maharashtra,"

"This (breaking of alliance) is an insult to the 105 Marathi martyrs of the Samyukta Maharashtra movement," an editorial in Sena mouthpiece 'Saamana' said here.

"It is unfortunate that the Sena-BJP alliance which for the last 25 years was bound by the Hindutva ideology has ended," the Sena said.

Interestingly, MNS chief Raj Thackeray has also hit out against the BJP for breaking ties with Shiv Sena.

“Do you think that the BJP can now be trusted after what they did to the Shiv Sena? Some BJP leader told me that they had planned the break-up long ago. Did Uddhav not understand this? If Balasaheb would have been alive today, he would have broken the alliance a month ago itself," Thackeray said, addressing his maiden election rally.

President's Rule was imposed, yesterday, in poll-bound Maharashtra after Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan resigned following the break-up of 15-year-old Congress-NCP alliance in the state.

Maharashtra assembly polls are scheduled to be held on October 15.

President's Rule imposed in poll-bound Maharashtra after NCP, Congress part ways

President's Rule imposed in poll-bound Maharashtra after NCP, Congress part ways
President's rule was imposed in Maharashtra on Sunday, a day after the Union Cabinet gave its nod for the same on the suggestion of Governor of the State CV Rao.

The state came under President's rule today, a couple of days after Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan submitted his resignation to Governor CV Rao on Friday after Nationalist Congress Party withdrew its support from the ruling coalition.

The proclamation for imposition of President's Rule in Maharashtra was signed by President Pranab Mukherjee, a day after a Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Home Minister Rajnath Singh agreed to the Governor's proposal of clamping central rule in the state after breaking up of the 15-year old NCP-Congress alliance.

The Congress and the NCP snapped ties after they failed to iron out their differences on seat-sharing just days ahead of last day to file nominations for Maharashtra Assembly polls.

NCP had been insisting on contesting half of the state's 288 seats.

Now, all major parties, namely the BJP, Shiv Sena, Congress and the NCP are set to go it alone in the polls, which are scheduled for October 15.

As the state of Maharashtra came under President's rule in wake of NCP-Congress parting ways, Union Road Transport and Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari on Sunday said that the state now needed a one-party rule.

Suggesting that the BJP will take over the reins of the state, Gadkari said that one-party rule will change Maharashtra as his party will work towards its development, reported the ANI.

Kings XI Punjab dish out another dominating show, beat Cape Cobras by seven wickets

Mohali: A clinical Kings XI Punjab steamrolled Cape Cobras by seven wickets for their fourth win in a row as they ended their Group B engagements with a flourish in the Champions League Twenty20 tournament, here on Sunday.

With this win, Punjab, who have already qualified for the semifinals, have finished on top of Group B with 16 points and will enter the knockout stage unbeaten.

The hosts were in complete control of the inconsequential rubber as they won the toss, shot out the South African side for a mere 135 in 18.3 overs and then overhauled the target without any fuss with 11 balls to spare overs at PCA stadium.

It was Punjab bowlers who set up the win as paceman Anureet Singh (3/12) and spinner Akshar Patel (3/15) shared six wickets between them.

Richard Levi top-scored for the South African side with his 42-run knock but it was Hashim Amla who provided impetuous to their innings at start with his blistering 22-ball 40.

Amla and Levi were only ones who put up some resistance as other Cobras batsmen failed to get going and were bowled out without completing their 20-overs quota.

Cobras were 105 for two in the 13th over and lost last eight wickets for addition of just 30 runs.

None of the Punjab batsmen set the field on fire but the target was so modest that their small contributions were enough for the easy win.

Virender Sehwag (23) looked in good touch as he played some delectable drives on the off side before being dismissed by Robin Peterson.

The other Punjab opener Manan Vohra (23) became second victim of Peterson as the left-arm spinner gave away just 19 runs in his four overs.

Big-hitting batsman Glenn Maxwell (23) hit a six each off Omphile Ramela and Sybrand Engelbrecht but he also could not last long. Wriddhiman Saha kept holding the one end as he guided the side home with his 35-ball 42.

Saha hit three boundaries, including a six, in his innings while David Miller finished unbeaten on 16.

Saha was excellent behinds the wickets also as he effected two stumpings and took one catch.

Earlier, the two Cobras openers put on 60 runs for the opening wicket and that was only bright spot for the South African side after they were asked to take first strike.

Anureet got into action after Cobras had lost their top-order batsmen as he began with the wicket of Stiaan van Zyl before getting two lower-order batsmen.

Patel accounted for Sybrand Engelbrecht (5), Justin Kemp (2) and Vernon Philander (5).

Amla along with Levi made a fiery start for the Cobras as they creamed off 59 runs in the Powerplay overs.

Amla, particularly, was harsh on the host bowlers as he punished them with seven fours and a six in his pacy knock.

With nothing working, Punjab skipper George Bailey introduced Karanveer Singh and the young leg-spinner responded by dismissing the dangerous-looking Amla.

Levi, who was going a-run-a-ball so far, opened his arms and lifted Karanveer for a huge six over long-off, continuing where Amla had left.

The new batsman in Omphile Ramela (12) though did not last long, falling to a poor shot off paceman Thisara Perera.

Runs dried up as hosts took control over the proceedings with some good bowling. Levi brought up the hundred of the innings with a six off Glenn Maxwell but the bowler had revenge two balls later when the Australian held on to a difficult caught and bowled chance.

Losing a set batsman was not what Cobras wanted. But the misery did not end here as they continued to lose batsmen.

Paceman Parvinder Awana got rid of Dane Vilas (10) and Patel saw the back of Sybrand Engelbrecht (5). Anureet then polished of the tail.

Mumbai: Shahid Kapoor has given one of the biggest hits of his career with Vishal Bhardwaj's ‘Kaminey’ and now the duo has teamed up again for ‘Haider’, which the actor says is the best film of his career so far.

"I can proudly say 'Haider' is the best film of my career. This film has everything that I haven't done before. I have pinned my hopes on this film," Shahid told reporters in a group interview.

Released in 2009, ‘Kaminey’ starred Shahid in a double role and he won accolades for his performance from all quarters.

‘Haider’ is set against the unrest in the Kashmir Valley and revolves around a guy called Haider who wants to avenge his father's death. An adaptation of William Shakespeare's play ‘Hamlet’, the film also stars Shraddha Kapoor.

"Some people like violence, some like romance but I know people will connect emotionally with 'Haider'," said the 33-year-old.

Shahid says he believes in doing good work without caring much about box office collection or any award.

"Everyone tells me that this film ('Haider') will win the National Award but I am not thinking about it. Earlier, I would think about box-office collections but now I enjoy my work. If we win a National Award, it will be good for us. But if we don't, I will still be happy that I did this film," he said.

The actor also has good words to share about Bhardwaj.

Demand to break ties with MGP just an opinion: Parrikar

Panaji: Amidst demand from a section of BJP workers to severe ties with Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party in the state government, Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar Monday said it was "just an opinion".

"Each one has a different opinion. Lot of people have different opinion. What is there if they express opinion?" the Chief Minister asked.

Parrikar was responding to the demand by a section of BJP workers, who want the party to break its pre-poll alliance with MGP.

When asked whether the party workers had expressed their wish in front of him, Parrikar refused to comment.

During the recent state executive meeting of BJP, a section of party workers had asked the leaders to drop MGP from the government.

The BJP currently has 21 legislators, an absolute majority in the 40-member House, while MGP has three legislators.

Meanwhile, MGP leader and state transport minister Sudin Dhavalikar, reacting to the demand, said "it must be the wish of a few BJP workers."

"You will find few workers in every party with different views. There are few people who have bigger political ambitions," he added.

BJP legislator Vishnu Wagh said such a demand was "foolish" as the party had stitched a pre-poll alliance with the MGP.

Tridents take on Knights in bottom-placed battle

With Kings XI Punjab and Hobart Hurricanes already booking their semi-final spot from this group, bottom-placed Tridents and fourth-placed Knights have already bowed out of the tournament and the two sides will play for pride at the M Chinnaswamy stadium.

Tridents, who lack big names, come into this game after a loss at the hands of Cape Cobras in their last match, while Knights, in their last game, were outclassed by Kings XI Punjab, who entered the last-four in their maiden CL T20 appearance.

Knights, who started off well in the 'powerplays' before their 216-run chase ran out of steam, were skittled out for paltry 95 in 15.2 overs.

The 'Pink Panthers' from New Zealand, who had done well at the start of the tournament, found it difficult to handle the young spin duo of leg-spinner Karanveer Singh (4/15 in 3.2 overs) and left-arm spinner Akshar Patel (2/16 in 4 overs) during middle overs.

Tridents, on the other hand, were outwitted by Cobras in a thrilling 'Super Over' contest in spite of a brilliant unbeaten 111 by Jonathan Carter.

In the bowling department, experienced campaigner Ravi Rampaul will really have to step up after a wicketless show against Cobras.

Jeevan Mendis has been the pick of their bowling attack and a lot will depend on him, Jason Holder and Ashley Nurse.

AI pilot covers up injury to flyers, ‘damaged’ Dreamliner still flying

In a shocking attempt at a cover-up and in complete disregard for safety, the captain of an Air India flight allegedly threatened his co-pilot and cabin crew from reporting an incident of air turbulence that seriously injured several passengers and damaged the plane.

The incident, which occurred on September 7 on AI’s Delhi-Shanghai flight, came to light when an anonymous complaint was received from one of the cabin crew alleging that the damaged plane, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner, was still doing flights “without any proper checks which will further endanger passengers”

“I was one of the cabin crew on AI flight 348. We were in the middle of service when there was a massive jolt. It felt as if the aircraft had gone out of control. The passengers and cabin crew were thrown in the air and fell on the floor. Some of them were badly injured,” the complaint said.

“The seat belt sign came on and there was a panicked  announcement by the captain for everyone to remain seated. After landing, the captain called each crew member and threatened us against any of us opening our mouths about the incident. I believe he even threatened the co-pilot,” it said.

The captain was an instructor (senior-most pilot).

Apple plays defence on iPhone 6 bending, software concerns

Apple Inc broke its silence on complaints about bending iPhones, hours after withdrawing a glitch-ridden software update as the company struggles to restore momentum to the rollout of its latest phones.

"With normal use, a bend in iPhone is extremely rare and through our first six days of sale, a total of nine customers have contacted Apple with a bent iPhone 6 Plus," Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller said in an email.

Apple shares closed down nearly 4 % at $97.87 on Thursday, wiping out nearly $23 billion in market value.

The new phones face criticism over their bendability, dubbed "bendgate". Social media and online forums have been abuzz with comments about how the new phones can bend when placed in back pockets or while wearing skinny jeans.

Apple said its iPhones feature stainless steel and titanium inserts to reinforce high-stress locations and use the strongest glass in the smartphone industry.

The only way an iPhone may have bent is if someone put it in their back pocket and sat on the phone for a very long time, said Laban Roomes, chief executive of Goldgenie, which customizes and gold plates iPhones.

Apple was also forced to withdraw a faulty update to its latest operating system after some users of its new phones complained of call service disruptions.

"We apologise for the great inconvenience experienced by users," Muller said.

Apple said on its website it was working on an iOS update to fix the issue, and will release it in the next few days.

"I do believe this speaks to execution issues at Apple," said JMP Securities analyst Alex Gauna. "At the end of the day I believe this too shall pass, but we are noting with concern that the miscues pile up."

Hrithik Roshan reflects on split with wife, says it has been 'quite easy’

For Hrithik Roshan, the past few months have been trying times, owing to both physical (he underwent brain surgery) and emotional (he separated from wife Sussanne) reasons. But the actor is optimistic. In this interview, he opens up about life after his separation, and all things films.

Has the recent past, after your split from Sussanne, been difficult?
In a way, yes. But it has been very enlightening too. It has also been very easy because once you overcome the toughest challenge, the rest of the things become really simple. It has actually been quite simple and easy.

Was working on your new film challenging due to the emotional turmoil in your life?
Of course. It was more challenging due to emotional reasons. But that is exactly where the mental strength comes in. This is the brightest film I have done. And I’m playing a happy character. I did all this at a time when my life was in deep contrast to that. This journey has been a great victory in itself.

In between, your equation with Salman Khan apparently took a hit (rumours of a rift were rife after Hrithik didn’t promote Krrish 3 on Bigg Boss 7). How is it now?
I don’t have any so-called bad equation with any human being in the world. I am not that kind of a person. If I was not on his show, I was probably sitting on Salman’s sofa, chatting with him at his house. It’s silly to say that if I am not in his movie or I’m not working with him, then we don’t have a good relationship.

Your decision to walk out of Karan Johar’s Shuddhi (now starring Salman) made big news.
It’s a big film. Whatever news comes out of a big film will make big news. But it’s fine. They didn’t want to wait anymore. So, I gave them a nice and dignified way out.

Apparently, that soured your equation with Karan?
Why? How? First of all, it’s not that I didn’t do the film. Karan Malhotra (director) wanted to move on. So, he asked me whether he can make the film with someone else. I said, ‘Of course. Yes, please. By all means’. And then I gave out a statement saying that the film has been in a limbo for too long, and I can’t let someone’s vision stagnate like that. And so, they are moving on without me.

Do you feel bad on having missed out on Shuddhi?
Not at all. When the director doesn’t want you in the film, what are you going to do? There’s no point in feeling bad about the past.

Were you surprised at being pulled into all kinds of rumours at that time?
People don’t have the power to pull me in the direction that they want. They will write and say what they feel like. It doesn’t affect me.

Talks are that you might work with Rob Cohen (director of The Fast and the Furious)…
It’s not official yet. We are still working something out. It’s happening, and that’s obvious. He has come down twice and spent two weeks here. It’s not finalised yet, but if something works out, you will know.

Also, are you planning to move out of your family home, as reported?
I’m still looking for a plot. That’s (a flat he has bought in Akshay Kumar’s building) my apartment, but I’m not moving there. To move out, I have to zero in on the plot because we are a big family. I am not going to move out alone.

Has Bang Bang been your toughest film yet?
The situations were tough. There were physical and emotional challenges. But I went about doing the right thing with strength and minus any assumptions, which is based on just outcomes and goals. If you stop assuming the worst, your brain clears up, and you can be far more objective. That made it easier.

Was it different working with Katrina Kaif for the second time?
She’s great fun on the sets and is a superb team player. She’s also a perfectionist, who will go to any length to achieve something she wants. That is proved by the way she has conquered a career in a language she didn’t know.

Memory slips in elderly may signal Alzheimer

Self-reported memory complaints are strong predictors of clinical memory impairment later in life, the findings showed.

Alzheimer's is the most common type of dementia. "What's notable about our study is the time it took for the transition from self-reported memory complaint to dementia or clinical impairment - about 12 years for dementia and nine years for clinical impairment - after the memory complaints began," said Richard Kryscio from University of Kentucky in US.

"That suggests that there may be a significant window of opportunity for intervention before a diagnosable problem shows up," Kryscio added.

For the study, the researchers asked 531 people with an average age of 73 years and free of dementia whether they had noticed any changes in their memory in the prior year.

During the study, 56 percent of the participants reported changes in their memory, at an average age of 82. The study found that participants who reported changes in their memory were nearly three times more likely to develop memory and thinking problems.

About one in six participants developed dementia during the study, and 80 percent of those first reported memory changes.

The study appeared in the journal Neurology.

Expanding waistlines may increase breast cancer risk

Going up one skirt size every 10 years was associated with a 33 percent greater risk of developing breast cancer after the menopause, the findings of the Britain-based study showed.

Going up two skirt sizes in the same period was associated with a 77 percent greater risk.

The researchers estimated that the five year absolute risk of post-menopausal breast cancer rises from 1 in 61 to 1 in 51 with each increase in skirt size every 10 years.

"Although the exact mechanism of these relationships need to be better understood, there is a suggestion that body fat around the waist is more metabolically active than adipose tissue elsewhere," said Usha Menon from University College London in Britain.

"Extra fat is known to boost levels of the female hormone estrogen, on which many breast cancer cells rely for fuel," the study authors added.

The findings were based on almost 93,000 women taking part in UK Collaborative Trial of Ovarian Cancer Screening (UKCTOCS) in England.

The women were all aged over 50, had gone through menopause and did not have breast cancer when they entered the study between 2005 and 2010.

During the monitoring period, 1090 women developed breast cancer. As expected, infertility treatment and family history of breast/ovarian cancer were significantly associated with a heightened risk of being diagnosed with the disease.

Increases in skirt size, however, emerged as the strongest predictor of breast cancer risk.

The study appeared in the journal BMJ Open.

Acting is still my first love: Director Ashutosh Gowariker

Now a well-established director, he confesses "acting is still my first love" and that he awaits an apt role to sway him off direction.

"If I am offered a very good part, which will woo me away from my direction I will do it because somewhere I feel acting is still my first love," the director, who started his stint in showbiz as a model for Close Up Toothpaste and Lifebuoy soap, said.

Before venturing into film-making with 'Pehla Nasha' in 1993 and giving hits like Oscar-nominated 'Lagaan' as well as historical magnum opus 'Jodhaa Akbar', Gowariker showed his acting skills on both small and big screens, which included classic TV shows 'Kachchi Dhoop' and 'Circus'.

"After acting, I discovered direction. There is limitless creativity in direction and I'm still exploring that, but I feel that if I get an interesting part and I have free time from movie-making, then I would do it," said Gowariker, who was part of films like 'Chamatkar' and 'Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa'.

So what kind of role is he looking out for? "A strong character to which I can do justice and which can leave an impact," replied the filmmaker, looking relaxed in a casual jeans and shirt.

Tell him that since 'Lagaan', each of his film is set in a specific time period and he responds saying that it is because he enjoys "creating a different world".

"The first thing that comes to my mind is theme and then I start working on the script, story idea and panning it out based on the theme. I try and choose the right setting to tell the story," he said and added that his motto is to entertain and give some kind of message to ignite audiences' thought process.

"Like in case of 'Jodhaa Akbar' religious tolerance was my theme. I could have made that as a contemporary story, but I choose to make it as a love story between an emperor and a princess," he added.

His undying spirit is not even dampened by flops like his last project 'Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey'. Failures don't limit the filmmaker from capturing the grandeur and glory of any era in his movies with a bumper budget.

"We do not think about failure during the process of making something. We always think that it will be liked by everyone and with that knowledge we go out and make it," said Gowariker.

Following the same philosophy, he embarks on a new journey with another big-budget historical 'Mohenjo Daro'.

The curiosity around 'Mohenjo Daro' is very high for which he has grabbed in on international talents like Oscar-nominated and Emmy Award-winning costume designer April Ferry.

But the filmmaker has no intention of satisfying people's curiosity about the film, which will see Hrithik Roshan in the lead role.

"All questions will be answered with the release of the film," was his response.

Fasten your seat belts: 'Bang Bang' theatrical trailer released

This film is easily on par with any Hollywood flick and Hrithik's breath-taking stunts are something we have never seen before. With crashing along with sky-high waves and riding their way through mazes of concrete, Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif make many a heart skip a beat.

We all know that Hrithik has started a trend of #BangBangdare on micro-blogging site Twitter, and now the makers have found another way of attracting fans of the film. They are giving them a chance to get a personalised Bang Bang poster. Hrithik tweeted, “Wanna get ur own digital poster of #Bangbangmovie wth a spcl msg frm me? Jst tweet to @foxstarhindi wth #Mybangbangposter.” The poster reads a personal message from the lead pair Hrithik and Katrina with the name of the fan written on the top.

The recently released Bang Bang teaser featuring Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif performing some never seen-before death-defying stunts broke all records in Bollywood. The minute-long teaser garnered a whopping 2.33 million views in 24 hours and went on to become the most watched teaser/trailer ever in the history of Indian cinema. Till now the trailer of the movie is about to touch 14 millions hits mark.

Haven't found anything interesting: Hrithik on Hollywood

"Hollywood projects are always there. I keep getting Hollywood scripts every now and then. I read them, but I have not found anything interesting so far," Hrithik told reporters in a group interview.

So far, he has got five or six scripts from Hollywood.

After a string of hits in the form of 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara', 'Agneepath' and 'Krrish 3' in the last three years, he is set to return to the silver screen to entertain his fans with 'Bang Bang', one of the easiest films of his career.

"Yes, it's one of the easiest films I have done in my life. Once you go through the biggest trouble in your life everything gets easy. You don't get afraid of challenges you only try to get better," said the actor who will be seen romancing Katrina Kaif in the film.

Slated for an 2nd Oct release, the film has been helmed by director Siddharth Anand whose endeavour 'Anjaana Anjaani' bombed at the box office.

But Hrithik doesn't judge a person on the basis of success or failure.

"Everyone said why are you signing Siddharth's film, but a man should be judged for what he is right now. To judge a man by his past films is not right. Films are about exploring and not about image. If you are stuck with your image, then it will not help," said the 40-year-old.

Delhi Metro to operate at highest point in Dhaula Kuan

The Metro viaduct between South Campus and Delhi Cantonment metro stations of the under-construction 59 km-long Majlis Park-Shiv Vihar corridor, which will cross over the existing alignment of the Airport Express line at Dhaula Kuan, will be constructed without hampering movement of trains on the Airport Line and traffic movement between Ring Road and
Sardar Patel Marg.

"The height of the viaduct will be 23.6 meters at this spot, as high as a 7 storey building, and will be the highest point of Delhi Metro so far surpassing Karkarduma where the Metro is 19 meters above the ground," DMRC Executive Director (Corporate Communications) Anuj Dayal said.

The 'launching operation' above the Airport line is done only during non-operating hours between 12.30 am till 4 am to avoid any disruption to the traffic on Airport line.

During this time, no activities for train operations are permitted on that portion of the Airport Express Line. A diversion road has also been constructed so that there is no inconvenience to the commuters.

After getting clearances from Operation and Maintenance (O&M) Department of the Airport line, the launching work is done and all the parts of launcher are earthened before commencing work.

"In order to ensure the safety of the workers and trains and traffic below, DMRC has installed CCTV cameras at various locations on the viaduct of the Airport Line and on the launcher to monitor the overall activities," Dayal said.

A team of six Civil Engineers, two safety experts, Engineers from O&M department and other experts are closely monitoring every movement of the launcher, weighing 350 tons, in the night so as to ensure that process of erecting segments over the existing viaduct and Over Head Electrification (OHE) of the Airport Express line is carried out smoothly without causing any damage to the already operational line, he added.

DMRC's design tram has also prepared the layout of the viaduct after closely studying the requirement of passing over major landmarks such as the Airport Line viaduct and the flyover at such a height.

The distance between the rail levels of this under construction line and existing Airport Express line is 11.90 meters.

The viaduct of the Airport Express Line is at a height of 11.7 meters from the ground level. This under construction viaduct above the Airport express line, Sardar Patel Marg flyover and slip roads is 111 meters long and is supported by four piers of 23.6 meters height.

"This viaduct will be completed by the end of October 2014 as during one block only one segment can be erected," Dayal said.

Apart from Dhaula Kuan, the elevated viaducts of Delhi Metro's Phase III will pass over the existing viaducts of the Phase I and Phase II metro corridors at four more different locations.

At Karkarduma, the construction for viaduct of the Majlis Park–Shiv Vihar corridor is passing over Line 4 (Yamuna Bank to Vaishali).

At Netaji Subhas Place, the viaduct of the Majlis Park – Shiv Vihar corridor will pass over Line 1 (Rithala to Dilshad Garden) at this location.

At Mayur Vihar, the viaduct of the Majlis Park–Shiv Vihar corridor will pass over Line 3 (Dwarka Sector 21 to Noida City Centre) at this location.

At Anand Vihar, the viaduct of the Majlis Park–Shiv Vihar corridor will pass over Line 4 (Yamuna Bank to Vaishali) at this location.

High tide of hope for change in India: PM Modi

"He (Narendra Modi) had said during Lok Sabha elections that Indian land under China's control will be freed and lesson will be taught to Pakistan.

"During the recent visit of China's President Xi Jinping to India, Chinese army entered into Indian territory. We want to know where is the 56-inch chest now. What happened today when Chinese army is entering our territory. Nothing is happening," Kumar said.

He was addressing 'Samman' rally organised by INLD to mark the 100th birth anniversary of former deputy prime minister Chaudhary Devi Lal here.

"They (BJP) talk of development while sitting in Delhi, but at lower level, they try to divide people," Kumar alleged.

He alleged BJP leaders have become "arrogant" as their senior leaders like L K Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi have not been given "respectable" place in the party.

"After winning (Lok Sabha) polls, BJP leaders have become arrogant. They do not have respect for their old and senior leaders like L K Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi. What kind of tradition they are following," he said.

Former chief minister of Haryana and INLD chief Om Parkash Chautala, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and former prime minister H D Deve Gowda were also present at the rally.

Power-shortage-maybe-in-state

Raipur medical college of fake mark sheets appointments

Utera sowing of peas would also like tivra

Kotwar brutally killed by maoists on suspicion of whistle blowing
