Here is why our great new year

भारतवर्ष में नया साल गुडी पडवा यानी संवत्सरी पडवा से ही माना जाता है। नए साल के इस पहले दिन को महाराष्ट्र व मध्यभारत् में गुडी पडवा, कर्नाटक व आंध्रप्रदेश में उगाडी, तमिलनाड़ू में पुथांडू, असम में बीहू, पंजाब में बैसाखी, उडीसा में पाना संक्रांत् व पश्चिम बंगाल में नववर्ष के रूप में मनाया जाता है।

भारतीय संस्कृति में सृष्टि का आरंभ और नए साल का प्रारंभ क् जनवरी से नहीं, बल्कि चैत्र शुल प्रत्पिदा यानी गुडी पडवा पर्व से होना माना गया है। तर्क संगत बात ये है कि नए साल का शुभारंभ इसी दिन से माने जाने के पीछे कई पौराणिक व वैज्ञानिक त्थ्य हैं।

समूचे सौरमण्डल एवं धरामण्डल की इसी सच्चाई कव् कारण पाश्चात्य जगत् को भी अपने कैलेण्डर वर्ष् (१ जनवरी से ३१ दिसंबर) में बाद में संसोधन करना पडा और वित्तीय वर्ष (अप्रैल से मार्च के बीच) माना गया। यह वित्तीय वर्ष भारतीय चैत्री वर्ष लगभग समरूप ही है।

पृथ्वी प्राकृतिक फसल चक्र की ही नहीं बल्कि सपूर्ण सौरमण्डल में भी आज (चैत्र शुल प्रत्पिदा) से ही कालचक्र कव् परिवर्त्न और नए वर्ष का प्रारंभ का संकव्त् मिलता है। यही कारण है कि हमारे सूक्ष्मदर्शी खगोल एवं दर्शन शास्त्री वैज्ञानिक दृष्टि सपन्न ऋषियों ने सृष्टि संवत्, द्वापर श्रीकृष्ण संवत्, कलियुग संवत्, शक संवत्, विक्रम संवत् आदि इसी दिन से प्रारंभ होना माना है।

यहां ये समझना जरूरी है कि जब हमारा वार्ष्कि कैलेंडर इत्ना शास्त्रसम्मत, तर्कसंगत और प्रकृति सम्मत है तो फिर हमारे देश में पाश्चात्य कैलेंडर का इत्ना प्रभुत्व कैसे हो गया? इसका जवाब अंग्रेजों के शासन में मिलता है। दरअसल, अंग्रेजों ने भारत् सहित् तमाम औपनिवेशिक देशों में अपने शासन काल के दौरान अंग्रेजी पद्धति के गेगेरियन कैलेण्डर को अपनी साथ व चतुराई के बल पर लागू कर दिया। भारत् में तो इसे अंग्रेजी शासन के कई सालों के दौरान जबरन थोपा गया।

धीरे-धीरे कालगणना का यह चक्र हम भारतीयों की आदत में समावीष्ट हो गया और हम जनवरी से दिसंबर की अवधि को ही वर्ष मानने लगे।

सवाल यह है कि अपनी कालगणना में ही शामिल हो गए गुलामी कव् इस चिह्न को हम कब तक स्वाभिमान शून्य रहकर ढ़ोते रहेंगे? विज्ञानसम भारतीय काल गणना को अपने स्वदेशी गौरव के लिये हमें इस गुलामी के चिह्न को हटाना और अपनी स्वदेशी समृद्ध सर्वेष्ठ काल गणना (भारतीय पंचांग) का प्रयोग प्रचलन में लाना नितांत आवश्यक है। साथ ही हमें नए साल के प्रारंभ के रूप में गुडी पडवा पर्व को उत्सव के रूप में मनाने में भी गौरव का अनुभव करना चाहिये।

Google to release Android 4.4.3 update with bug fixes

Google is reportedly planning for another minor update to the Android platform, according to sources.

The release of the Android 4.4.3 suggests that the latest version will focus on bug fixes and minor tweaks.

According to Cnet, the first whispers of the update came via LlabTooFeR, a reputable and well-connected ROM developer.

The developer said that the 4.4.3 update would debut within the next few weeks, adding that it would also address a known camera issue.

Meanwhile, many of these features may not be noticeable to the average user, the report added.

Google floats April Fools' 'Pokemon Master' role at Maps division

Video Google's Maps team has made an early entry into this year's April Fools' crop of pranks with the introduction of Pokemon to the mobile application.

The company said in a video that it would be adding the Pokemon-tracking functionality as part of a campaign to hire a new "Pokemon Master" position within the company. Those who can "catch" images of all 150 Pokemon on their mobiles would be eligible to take the new role of "Pokemon Master" within the company.

To help promote the search, the company has added a new feature to the iOS and Android versions of Google Map which adds the Pokemon-tracking ability. Users can press a special button within the Google Maps screen to locate nearby Pokemon which can then be "caught" with a tap and catalogued on Maps.

According to Google's posting, the "Pokemon Master" will be selected on 2 April, after the company conducts an internal "battle" to decide who makes the hire.

"We value employees who are risk-taking and detail-oriented, have deep technical knowledge, and can navigate through tall grass to capture wild creatures," read a post to the Google Asia Pacific blog.

"It turns out that these skills have a lot in common with another profession — that of the Pokémon Master."

This should go without saying, but least you still harbour dreams of being an IRL Google Pokemon master, the contest is an April Fools' joke from the Chocolate Factory. As they're wont to do every year, companies throughout the IT and consumer electronics spaces are planning press releases, videos and other joke campaigns to run tomorrow.

Past Google gags have included 8-bit NES Maps and an 'ambinavigation' tool to bring multitasking options to Chrome.

In other April Fools' tedium news, Richard Branson has gotten his Virgin Airlines crew in on the jokes, posting a page touting a supposed partnership with Nest to offer personal climate control to passengers. Options range from "Chicago Polar Vortex" to "Cancun Afternoon". ®

iPhone 6 display variants spotted in leaked images, design schematics

A number of purported images and specifications of the proposed Apple iPhone 6 device have surfaced online, starting a new wave of rumours.

There are three images coming from different regions across the world that indeed show two variations of the next iPhone 6, corroborating a previous report about two-screen sizes - 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch.

The first wave of rumours come from popular French publication, Nowhereelse, which alleges to shows detailed schematics of the iPhone 6. From the image, it has been noted that the handset might feature a wide 85mm body, which is more than that of Samsung Galaxy Note 3's (79.2mm) and HTC One Max's (82.5mm) width. The image also shows the handset to be rather tall, with a 150mm height. If real, this schematic is probably of the rumoured 5.5-inch variant.

The second image comes from a Japanese magazine, MacFan (via Phonearena), which also shows the schematics of the alleged iPhone 6 in detail but with minor changes as compared to that seen with Nowehereelse.

The image shows a flat smartphone which has almost bezel-less screen and rectangle volume buttons unlike the circular ones seen till now. The image shows drawings for two possible variants, one with 4.7-inch screen and one with 5.7-inch screen - contradicting the Nikkei report about a 5.5-inch display variant. While the 4.7-inch model is said to be 137mm tall, 66mm wide and 7mm thick, the larger 5.7-inch iPhone 6 model is seen with 157mm height, 77mm width and only 6.7 mm thickness.

Lastly, three alleged images of the iPhone 6 popped up online from a Wiebo account. The live shots (See above) are said to have arrived straight from Foxconn, Apple's primary mobile manufacturer, and show an alleged prototype device. The images show an all-metallic smartphone with an Apple logo on the back panel and a slightly protruding camera from the body.

The protruding camera is nothing new to Apple as the firm has already went down the path with the same hardware in its iPod Touch. The Cupertino firm, as per the smartphone seen in the image, seems to be focussing more towards the curved hardware of the device rather than its screen. However, since nothing is confirmed, one can only take these images as a mere rumour.

Besides these image leaks, Reuters additionally mentioned that Apple suppliers will begin mass producing displays as early as May for the next iPhone. Japan Display Inc, Sharp Corp and South Korea's LG Display Co Ltd have all been tapped to make the screens, as per the reports.

The image leaks hinting the next iPhone to arrive in two screen size variants goes in line with what was mentioned last month. Reports suggested that the handset is expected to come in two versions with a 4.7- or 5.5-inch screen, up from the current four-inch panel...

Gionee has just pulled the wraps off their latest smartphone – the Elife S5.5. This is the first handset in the new ‘S’ series and the S5.5 gets its name due to the 5.5mm thickness. This makes it the slimmest Android smartphone yet. As usual, Gionee launched this phone with a grand affair in Goa and after witnessing the announcement, we had a chance to play around with the handset a bit. Here are our first impressions of the Gionee Elife S5.5.

The first thing that will strike you is the design. The S5.5 is a work of art and looks absolutely stunning in person. The pretty looks are backed up by a magnesium alloy chassis, which lends it strength and durability.

The edges are tapered off which actually helps in providing very good grip despite the slim form factor. The phone has a glass front and back, which in most cases, would mean a perfect recipe for a fingerprint magnet. Surprisingly, that’s not the case here. The phone doesn’t hold onto smudges all that much which is great news, especially when you’re going to be using this phone in India...

Apple iPhone 6 display production to start in May, but larger 5.5in model delayed

Apple's suppliers are expected to begin cranking out iPhone 6 displays as of May, before the launch of the device this autumn – but the rumoured larger sized next-gen iPhone might suffer from delays.

This is the latest from Reuters' sources, who say that the 4.7in iPhone is going to be produced first, with the larger phablet-sized 5.5in screen facing the potential delay, according to those in the know in the supply chain.

The delay, which will allegedly run to several months, is apparently due to complications with Apple's in-cell panel tech and the much bigger screen – things aren't working out too well by the sounds of it, as the sources say Apple is considering a shift to a film sensor rather than in-cell for the 5.5in model.

As you'll likely be aware, rumours of the iPhone coming out in two larger models have been circulating for a while now – and we recently reported on Nikkei confirming that production is ready to spin up for 4.7in and 5.5in models.

Apple's current 4in iPhone is looking decidedly small next to the Android giants which are now commonly tipping 5in and well over (6in in some cases), so Apple is looking to get even, size-wise, and also up the resolution (naturally – Cupertino could hardly be left behind in the ppi race, either).

Reuters' sources also revealed that LG, Sharp and Japan Display have been enlisted when it comes to producing the iPhone displays. Again, this ties up with the previous report from Nikkei, which mentioned the latter two (although not LG), and said mass production was due to start between April and June.

So May would certainly seem a fair bet – but bear in mind these are still rumours, even if the weight of them is certainly increasing.

Bigger than Lumia 620
Promo posters for the Nokia Lumia 630 in China showed us some specifications of the phone and it turns out the Lumia 630 will be bigger in display and size than the last-gen 620. 

However, it’ll still be smaller than the Lumia 625, which saw some success in India. Earlier rumours had suggested that it will have a 4.3-inch display, but it’s been revealed that Nokia is fitting in a 4.5-inch one. However its said to have only a WVGA resolution, which does sound quite low...
