"We never did this kind of thing. Their thinking is that the democratic process is useless and not required. They cannot say it outside but this is their thinking," Gandhi said.

Adressing an alumni meet of Youth Congress, Rahul charged BJP does not believe in democracy and on the contrary when there was UPA government at the Centre, leaders of opposition parties always got a chance to speak in parliament.

He also referred to the protest led by him in Parliament over the controversial remarks of union minister Niranjan Jyoti amid a stalemate between the government and the opposition on the issue.

He said while the programmes of UPA were eaimed at giving power to the people at large, those of NDA government "snatch power from people".

"This is the difference. The Prime Minister feels that he alone can run the country. He deeply believes in this. And this can never work. Only people of this country will run it...His thinking is of symbolism. Say anything, market it and then start saying the next thing. People will react to it," Gandhi said as he also sought to pick holes in the Prime Minister's Sansad Gram Yojana scheme.

Narendra Modi to launch BJP's membership drive today

"As per the BJP's constitution, the party renews the membership every two years. On Saturday, Narendra Bhai will launch party's new membership drive with an aim to increase its strength by four times than the present one," Shah said addressing the Karyakarta Sankalp Adhiveshan here ahead of local bodies elections in Madhya Pradesh.

"A toll-free number will also be launched and people would be asked to give a missed call on it. After that they will get their membership number and other details through SMS," he said.

In states like Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Goa and others where the party is strong, the BJP will have to increase its membership by four times and work further towards cementing it permanently, he said.

Madhya Pradesh has to raise its membership to two crore this time, as per the target, he said.

In states where the party is not that strong, it has to ensure that the membership drive reaches from cities to towns, village and to booth level, the BJP leader said.

The frontal organisations too have been given the task of registering full-time party members.

BJP is the only party in the country which follows internal democracy in totality by holding elections every two years, Shah claimed.

PM Modi's tea meet with Central government secretaries today

The top bureaucrats have been invited for high tea during which work is expected to be discussed, sources said.

Modi had held a marathon two-and-a-half hour interaction with 79 secretaries and other senior officials of various ministries and departments on June four, barely nine days after assuming office.

At that meeting, Modi had asked bureaucrats to do away with "archaic" rules and procedures which hamper governance by creating "avoidable confusion".

Expressing full faith in the commitment and competence of bureaucrats to build a better future for the country, Modi had asked them to simplify and streamline administrative rules and procedures to make them people-friendly.

Since then, the government has already identified over 1000 such laws and rules which are in the process of being scrapped.

He had "encouraged the officers to take decisions and assured them that he would stand by them".

Promising to be accessible to all officers, he had also encouraged them to approach him with their "inputs and ideas".

Jayalalithaa, BJP allies in Tamil Nadu oppose NDA government's move on Hindi

NDA government's proposal to give prominence to Hindi in official accounts in social media has met with stiff opposition in Tamil Nadu with Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and even BJP allies joining DMK chief Karunanidhi in slamming the move, voicing fears of "imposition" of the language on non-Hindi speaking sections. Firing off a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Jayalalithaa described the Home Ministry's proposal as "against the letter and spirit" of the Official Languages Act, 1963," while pointing out that the "highly sensitive issue" caused "disquiet" to the people of Tamil Nadu "who are very proud of and passionate about their linguistic heritage". 

Social media by their very nature were not only accessible to all persons on the internet, but were meant to be a means of communication to persons living in all parts of India, including those in 'Region C', she said. "People located in 'Region C' with whom the Government of India's communication needs to be in English, will not have access to such public information if it is not in English. 

This move would therefore be against the letter and spirit of the Official Languages Act, 1963," she said. DMK President M Karunanidhi, whose party had successfully led the anti-Hindi agitation in 1960s, had dubbed the move as a beginning of "imposition of Hindi". The issue is credited as one of the reasons for DMK forming the state's first non-Congress government in independent India. The 90-year-old leader had questioned why Hindi should be given priority over other languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. "Giving priority to Hindi will be construed as a first step towards an attempt at creating differences among non-Hindi speaking people and making them second class citizens," he said.
