State-owned ONGC and Oil India Ltd (OIL) are likely to buy a 10 per cent stake in Indian Oil Corp (IOC) from the government at Rs. 220 per share, aggregating about Rs. 5,300 crore.

An Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoM) headed by Finance Minister P. Chidambaram had on February 28 decided to sell the stake in IOC, the nation’s largest oil firm, at a discount of 10 per cent through an off-market deal.

Sources said the IOC scrip traded at about Rs. 245 on that day and a 10 per cent discount to that price was calculated to arrive at a selling price of Rs. 220 a share. Also, Rs. 220 is the three-month average trading price of IOC shares.

The sale of the 10 per cent stake, or 24.27 crore shares, will be through an off-market transaction, with Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) and OIL each buying 5 per cent. The transaction may take place on March 14 or 15, they said.

Oil Minister M. Veerappa Moily had on February 28 confirmed the sale would will happen at 10 per cent discount.

“The two companies (ONGC and OIL) will now work out the deal and the stake sale will happen very shortly. It should be happening in next few days...It will be an off-market deal,” then Oil Secretary Vivek Rae stated after the EGoM meeting.

IOC shares fell 0.41 per cent to Rs. 254.10 on the BSE in afternoon trade on Thursday. They have gained more than Rs. 42 since January 16, when the EGoM on disinvestment cleared the stake sale at the current market price, plus/minus 1 per cent.

ONGC and OIL, however, wrote to the Petroleum Ministry saying they would each buy a 5 per cent stake in IOC at the six-month average traded price and not at the current rate.

The government then decided to offer the IOC shares to the companies at a 10 per cent discount to the current market price through an off-market deal.

ONGC currently holds an 8.77 per cent stake in IOC.

Although the Cabinet had originally cleared the stake sale in IOC through an offer for sale, the Finance Ministry had to go in for the block deal route after opposition from the Petroleum Ministry.

The Oil Ministry had argued that IOC shares should not be sold through an offer for sale as the current price did not reflect the right valuation of the company.

What books say about the left trunk of ganesha

Life wont get chocked in planning only

Nikon D5300: All you need for your imaging needs

Nikon D5300 camera, which has a 24 MP APS-C CMOS sensor, is priced at Rs 71,950.When the opportunity to review the new Nikon D5300 presented itself, I had a personal reason to give it a try—I was looking to upgrade from my 2008 vintage Canon 400D. The D5300 seemed like a good choice, as it offered more pixels, video capabilities and ease of use. And these are the parameters in which

I reviewed the D5300 and its Nikkor 18-140mm VR lens. It

retails for Rs 71,950.

Ease of use

When I packed the D5300 into the Tamrac quickdraw bag that had been home to my Canon camera and two lenses for so many years, one thing was certain: I was taking a much more capable camera in the same bag. And, the 18-140 lens was good enough to replace the other two, and 18-55 mm and a 75-300 mm.

My old Canon uses a now-archaic CF card, but the D5300, like all cameras these days, uses a SD card that is faster and much more convenient as it works almost anywhere without a card reader. My old camera has a tiny 2-inch LCD, so a 3.2-inch vari-angle LCD monitor is something that changed the whole ball game for me.

However, one thing bugged me a lot. The Live mode, which you use to record video, is activated by a lever alongside the control dial. In earlier Nikon cameras it used to be beside the screen. In its new location, it kept reminding me of the on/off switch in Canon cameras and I kept using it likewise.

More pixels

The camera has a 24 MP APS-C CMOS sensor. So that is a big jump for me from the 8 MP sensor on my Canon. But this also means that I have a bigger canvas to play with. However, the camera did not give the sort of clarity I have come to expect from Nikon in recent times, especially having tested the superb D800. It is definitely not bad, but there were some low light pictures that could have used a bit more sharpness. But I am pretty certain that was because of the zoom lens.

On the other hand, the auto-focus is superfast.

Micromax Canvas Turbo Mini A200 versus the Lava Iris Pro 30

Micromax Canvas Turbo Mini A200 versus the Lava Iris Pro 30
The budget Android segment is becoming a bit too cluttered with all Indian manufacturers trying to plug all possible price points between Rs 10,000 and Rs 15,000. However, in this space it is becoming increasingly difficult to find a differentiator in the Android phones.

Recently, two products caught our attention in this price range — the Lava Iris Pro 30 and Micromax’s Canvas Turbo Mini A200.

The Lava Iris Pro 30 is the first of the company’s new premium range of smartphones and is priced at Rs 15,499. The Canvas Turbo Mini A200, on the other hand, is a stripped down version of Canvas Turbo priced at Rs 14,490.
Here is a face off:

Design
In terms of design, the Lava Iris Pro 30 is undoubtedly better looking than the Micromax Canvas Turbo Mini A200. The Lava will remind you of the iPhone 4 and has a smooth, rubberised back panel and a metallic chrome rim frames the phone which has a rectangular monoblock design. Micromax Canvas Turbo Mini, like most other Android devices, has rounded corners and curved edges with a visible camera bump. This is a plain jane in comparison to the Iris Pro 30.

Common grounds
The two phones have loads of similarities. For starters, both flaunt 4.7-inch 720p HD displays. The Iris Pro gets an added advantage of having IPS display constructed using Gorilla Glass technology coupled with one-glass solution technique. Both smartphones run Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, have 4 GB internal storage and 32 GB micro SD card slots. Both smartphones offer Bluetooth 4.0 and WiFi (802.11 b/g/n) for wireless connectivity. Better location services are promised with GPS chip. Lava Iris Pro 30 weighs about 114 grams while the Micromax Canvas Turbo Mini is a shade lighter at 111 grams. Very close in terms of weight, the difference can be negligible.

Spec to spec
Both are powered by MediaTek processors. The Canvas Turbo Mini A200 has a quad-core 1.3 GHz MediaTek MT6582, while Iris Pro 30 is powered by a 1.2 GHz MediaTek MT6589 mobile processor.
The Lava Iris Pro 30 has an 8 megapixel backside illumination image sensor that can record full HD videos at 30 frames per second. The Canvas Turbo Mini A200 also comes with an 8 megapixel auto focus camera with HD videos at 30 frames per second. Both have LED flashes. The Iris Pro 30 has a 3 megapixel camera in the front, while the Canvas Turbo Mini A200 puts a 5 megapixel wide angle camera in the front.
Both are dual SIM phones, with Micromax option for normal SIMs and Laval favouring a mix of micro and normal...

Specs review: Micromax Canvas Knight A350 raises bar for sub-Rs 20K smartphones

Following the octa-core brigade, Micromax has launched its next flagship dubbed the Canvas Knight A350, for the Indian market. Just like most Micromax devices, it is a budget device with superior features. For Rs 19,999, the spec sheet of the Canvas Knight could put any sub-Rs 20,000 device to shame. Here’s a quick look at its tech specs.
Specs review: Micromax Canvas Knight A350 raises bar for sub-Rs 20K smartphones

User Interface – Android 4.2.2
While the hardware appears to be brilliant, the Canvas Knight is disappointing when it comes to the OS running on the device.  The Canvas Knight runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, similar to its previous flagship Canvas Turbo. With the nifty specs the phone holds, it appears to be more than capable of running Android 4.4 KitKat. What we don’t understand is what’s stopping Micromax from launching it with 4.3 at the very least, if not KitKat?

One should also expect pre-loaded apps from the company such as M! Security, M! Live, M! Unlock as well as third party vendors like Spuul, Hike, Opera Mini and more. Micromax had also signed a deal with BlackBerry to preload BBM on its Canvas phones. So, you can expect BBM for Android too. One can also expect Micromax’s software gimmickry like ifloat that serves as a quick launcher for calls, messages, browser, settings, etc. from any screen, blow to unlock, popup video, popup browser, and more.  You will also find Truecaller, GetIt, M!Vault pre-installed along with games such as RealSteel WRB, Where’s My Perry and Where’s My Water...

WhatsApp’s Jan Koum and Brian Acton feature in Forbes’ latest list of billionaires

WhatsApp’s Jan Koum and Brian Acton feature in Forbes’ latest list of billionairesMarking one of the biggest acquisitions so far, Facebook acquired WhatsApp for a whopping $19 billion last month. While we’ve been hearing the rags to riches tales around its creators Jan Koum and Brian Acton, here’s yet another feather in their cap. The duo has now secured a place in Forbes’ list of imminent billionaires.

While 38-year-old Koum takes the 202nd rank in the Forbes list, 42-year-old Acton takes the 551st spot. According to Forbes’ estimate,  Koum holds about 45 percent stake in the company, while his co-founder Brian Acton’s stake is estimated at over 20 percent. That makes Koum worth $6.8 billion and Acton worth not less than $3 billion.

The duo are also known for their transformation from strugglers to billionaires. “37-year-old Jan Koum, born in the Ukraine, went to the US when he was 16-years-old. His family struggled living on food stamps, venture capitalist Jim Goetz revealed had said in a blog post. His house had no electricity or hot water. In fact, Koum’s family picked up their food stamps only a couple of blocks away from WhatsApp’s offices in Mountain View, California, said earlier report by Wired’s David Rowan.

Acton’s story shows us that persevering in spite of rejection worked miracles for him. In 2009, Facebook turned Acton down for a job. But Facebook wasn’t the only one to miss a golden opportunity, as Acton, who formerly worked at Yahoo, also appears to have been rejected by Twitter in 2009. Five years later, here they are.

In 2009, amidst the aftermath of the financial crisis, Koum and Brian Acton, longtime Yahoo employees, went on to create a messaging service that they hoped would become the biggest cross-platform in the world. Koum reportedly came up with the idea for his company in 2009 after his gym banned the use of cell phones...
