World famous Sonepur cattle fair inaugurated in Bihar

Speaking on the occasion, Ansari vowed to develop the fair as an attractive tourist destination for visitors from across the country and the world.

With cooperation from the government and the people, the tourism department has set out on an ambitious goal to put in place best possible infrastructure and amenities at the fair to make it a memorable visit for tourists, he said.

Ansari said the state government was also working on a proposal to make the cattle fair a round-the-year event.

Public Health and Engineering Department (PHED) minister Mahachandra Prasad Singh, Legislative Council's Deputy Chairperson Salim Parvez were among a host of people who graced the inaugural function of the cattle fair.

The tourism department has made elaborate arrangements for the month-long fair through innovative planning to intersperse the cattle fair with exhibition-cum sale of consumer goods, cultural programmes and sports activities, including adventure sports like boat racing, para ceiling, water skiing and water canning, Principal Secretary (Tourism) Deepak Prasad had told reporters yesterday.

A host of animals like elephant, horse, birds and other domestic cattle have been brought from across the country for display at the fair, Prasad said, adding that trade of elephants, a routine affair at the fair, would not take place this year in view of strict Wildlife Protection Act guidelines.
