Google Hackathon to Focus on Local Language Apps

In order to increase the number of local language apps on the Android Play Store, Google will hold a two-day Hackathon and workshop in the city on Friday and Saturday.

Open to amateur and professional developers, the hackathon will encourage developers to make apps in regional languages in order to encourage more local users to start using the internet.

“The next 300 million internet users in the country will not use English. We are working on enabling access to the internet in Indian languages. The hackathon will help organisations prepare for the coming growth in Indian language internet,” said Rajan Anandan, Managing Director, Google India.

Google is expecting nearly 100 developers at the hackathon. Workshops covering technical aspects of creating apps to function with local language support as well as their monetisation will also be part of the workshop.

“The sessions will also cover business aspects of enabling existing Android applications in multiple languages and also show how this can further the reach and monetisation potential,” a statement from Google India said.
