Is Nokia X A Smart Android Move Or Unwanted Distraction?

In an effort to regain its market leadership position in the country, Nokia launched the Nokia X series yesterday, which includes three new smartphones running a modified version of the Android OS, called the Nokia X Software platform.

Nokia X is the first smartphone to-be launched in India carrying a price tag of Rs 8,599. The other two smartphones will be available in the coming two months. This is the first time that Nokia has launched a device using the Android OS. The company had earlier lost significant marketshare because of its reluctance to use the popular Android platform, as some of the popular apps were unavailable in its Windows-based Lumia series when it was launched.

Though the company has now adopted the Android OS, it might be difficult to regain the lost ground as other players like Samsung and Micromax have already made major Android strides and created strongholds. Nokia is also playing the affordability card with the launch of X series.

The company could use X series to fill the gap between the relatively basic Asha series devices and the higher-end Lumia series smartphones. Deepak Kumar, Founder Analyst at BusinessandMarket.net, however, doesn’t see Nokia X as a good move.

“While Nokia X could have been a good step after Nokia decided to discontinue the Symbian platform a few years ago, it doesn’t appear to be a good move from a strategic viewpoint, partly because it creates more confusion for the buyer and partly because it would scatter management focus at a time when all of that should be going into further strengthening the Lumia momentum, which is there.”..
